DETAILED DESCRIPTION
University is a great time to make friends. In fact, the friends you make during these years are some that you will keep for life.
Getting involved at university is one of the best ways to meet new people and find others with common interests. But where do you start? Here are a few ideas:
- Volunteer for the University
There are always areas looking for volunteers. It could be for PR for the student union or the university as a whole, providing dissertation help for students, assistance to professors, etc. You may even find the jobcentre looking for volunteers to help with going through the job board, posting new listings, and removing old ones.
Getting involved at university by volunteering doesn’t just help you make friends. You can build networks and gain experience for later job applications.
You don’t just have to volunteer on your campus, either. Consider volunteering at businesses in your area so you gain work experience linked to your degree. For example, law students could volunteer at the Citizens Advice Bureau or at a local solicitor to get some legal experience.
- Join a Sports Team
Do you love a certain sport? There are chances that your university has that sport and a team that you can join. Even if you’re not good enough to play the games, just going to the training and socializing with the team is a great way of getting involved at university. You’ll quickly make new friends with people who have similar interests to you.
Do watch out when you join a sports team! Some have initiation sessions within the first couple of weeks. They may look like fun but they can be brutal to those joining the team. If you don’t like that idea, the sports team may not be for you!
- Find a Society of Your Interest
What are your interests? Do you love rock music? Maybe you’re a fan of arts and crafts. You’ll be surprised how many societies there are at different schools and getting involved at university is easy.
Take your time to look for an opportunity to join the different clubs and societies at your university and find the ones that interest you. Most will offer a trial session before you pay to join, which is a great way to make sure you do enjoy something like this.
Not all societies are going to be for you so avoid signing up to all that seem interesting. It will be a waste of your money and time! Only sign up to those that are welcoming and fit your personality and taste during the taster sessions.
Getting involved at university is important. You can’t spend all your time studying! Make new friends—friends that you’ll keep for life!
